We have been recommending some books for lower grades and have heard good things back from those who have used them. As a convenience to our customers, we now stock them. These books were written in 1934. We like the fact that they don’t jump around. There are many stories that apply the math lessons and relate them to everyday life. These books are reproduced from the original, and come hard bound in 2-year volumes of about 500 pages each. The First Book covers 3rd and 4th grades. (Arithmetic was not taught before 3rd grade until the 1960s.) The Second Book covers 5th and 6th grades. The name of this series is Practical Arithmetics, written by Strayer and Upton.
First Book (covers 3rd & 4th grade)
The 3rd grade section of this book goes up to page 256. Some of the concepts that will be covered include numbers to 100, US money, reading and writing numbers; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts; addition with carrying, subtraction with borrowing, simple multiplication and division, telling time, the calendar, and measures. Story problems are used to apply the math to everyday life. Explanations of new principles and processes are clear and simple. The answers are in the back of the book.
The 4th grade section of the book starts on page 257. In this section, the student will move on to solving two-step problems, making change, reading and writing numbers, harder addition and subtraction, multiplying up to two 3-digit figures, long division, fractions, finding averages, measures of time, problem solving, measuring length and area, drawing to scale, and other units of measure. All that is learned will be applied through story problems. Again, the answers are in the back of the book.

Book 2 (covers 5th & 6th grade)
The 5th grade section of this book goes to page 256. Some of what will be covered include cash accounts; harder addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; applying all four functions to fractions, problem solving, comparing numbers, bills, measures, areas, scale drawing, volumes, graphs, reading and writing decimals; and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. There are lots of story problems, which apply the math to everyday life. Explanations of new principles and processes are clear and simple. The answers are in the back of the book.
We recommend skipping the 6th grade section of this book, and moving the student on to Level 6 of our DVD math program.
